Post‑Graduate Diploma in Statistical Methods & Analytics (PGDSMA)¶
Indian Statistical Institute, North‑East Centre (ISI, NEC), Tezpur – Completed in 2024
The programme provides rigorous training in theoretical and applied statistics, with emphasis on data analysis, statistical modelling, and machine learning. It is divided into two semesters, each ending with a project.
Semester I¶
- Probability Theory – Axioms, random variables, distributions, expectation, moment generating functions, limit theorems.
- Statistical Methods I – Descriptive statistics, sampling distributions, estimation (MLE, method of moments), confidence intervals.
- Statistical Inference – Hypothesis testing (Neyman‑Pearson, likelihood ratio), p‑values, Bayesian inference.
- Vectors & Matrices – Linear algebra fundamentals: vector spaces, eigenvalues, matrix factorisations.
- Programming: R and Python – Data manipulation, visualisation, basic statistical tests, simulation.
Semester II¶
- Statistical Methods II – Non‑parametric methods, bootstrap, categorical data analysis, ANOVA.
- Statistical Machine Learning – Supervised learning (regression, classification), resampling, tree‑based methods, SVM, clustering.
- Statistical Modeling – Linear models, generalised linear models (logistic, Poisson), model diagnostics, regularisation.
- Time Series and Regression Methods – ARIMA models, stationarity, forecasting, multiple regression, model selection.
- Project – An applied data analysis project on a real‑world dataset, culminating in a report and presentation.
The programme is intensive, with daily lectures and practical sessions. It is recognised by the AICTE and equivalent to a one‑year postgraduate diploma.
